An Opportunity to Make a Difference

Volunteers are the driving force that stands right alongside our dedicated staff at the Erie Humane Society. Their commitment, compassion, and teamwork are essential to the success of our mission to provide second chances to animals in need. As an invaluable extension of our daily operations, volunteers assist with socialization, exercise, essential shelter tasks, and fundraising events. Their efforts enhance the quality of care we provide and ensure every animal receives the attention, enrichment, and love they deserve on their journey to a forever home. We are always looking to expand our network with community members interested in getting involved.

Two Ways to Volunteer at the Erie Humane Society

At EHS, we offer two different volunteer pathways so you can choose the level of involvement that best suits your comfort, interests, and availability.

  1. Shelter Support Crew (18+) — (Limited Access, Brief Shelter Orientation Required. Space Is Limited.)

The Shelter Support Crew is perfect for adults who want to help the shelter in a non animal handling role. This pathway is great if you prefer lighter duties or want to get involved quickly.
Shelter Support Crew members help with tasks such as:

    • Light cleaning
    • Laundry and restocking
    • Preparing enrichment items
    • Groundskeeping
    • Events: Sitting at EHS Table (no animal handling is allowed)

This program does not include dog walking, cat socialization, or hands on animal care.

  2. Full EHS Volunteer — (Hands-On, Dog Walking/Cat Cuddling, Events and More)

If you want more responsibility and want to work directly with animals, you may choose to become a Full EHS Volunteer.

Full volunteers may participate in tasks such as:

    • Dog walking
    • Cat cuddling and socialization
    • Enrichment and daily care
    • Assisting at EHS events
    • Spending the night with animals during special events
    • Other hands on roles throughout the shelter
    • Orientation is required as well as monthly volunteering at EHS to remain active.
